High-Temperature Thermocouple Wire

High-temperature thermocouple wire and cable

High-temperature thermocouple wire is used where general-purpose plastic insulation is unsuitable for conditions along the cable route. The appropriate construction depends not only on maximum temperature, but also on exposure time, atmosphere, mechanical load, flexibility and protection against abrasion.

Available constructions may include ceramic-fibre insulation, glass fibre and protective metallic braid. The exact product reference, continuous and short-term temperature limits and outer protection must be confirmed for the required thermocouple calibration and installation.

Example of ceramic-fibre insulated thermocouple wire

Applications

  • Furnaces, heat treatment and drying processes.
  • Ceramics, glass and metal processing.
  • Wiring close to hot process equipment.
  • Installations where heat and abrasion occur together.

Important selection points

  • Thermocouple type and conductor construction.
  • Actual temperature along each section of the cable route.
  • Continuous exposure, peak temperature and heating cycles.
  • Atmosphere, moisture, chemicals and electrical insulation.
  • Bend radius, vibration, abrasion and any additional metallic braid.
  • Termination at the sensor, connector, junction box or instrument.

The highest nominal temperature limit is not automatically the best choice. A technically appropriate cable combines temperature resistance with the required flexibility, electrical insulation and mechanical protection.

Define the complete cable route

The conditions at the hot end can differ considerably from those near the junction box or instrument. Recording the temperature, movement and exposure for each section helps determine whether one construction is suitable throughout or whether a transition to another extension cable is required. Connector and termination temperatures should be checked at the same time.
